I was definitely on the verge of burning out;  unproductive at the office and cranky at home all the time.  I really needed to step back and forget about computers for a while.<\/p>\n<p>What I did instead:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Went on a family vacation to <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&#038;hl=en&#038;geocode=&#038;q=Dubuque,+IA&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;ll=42.500959,-90.6633&#038;spn=4.23555,11.381836&#038;z=7\">Dubuque, Iowa<\/a>, a mere 3 hour drive from Chicago.\n<ul>\n<li>Stayed in a hotel-waterpark with wife and 2 year old.  Waterpark every day.<\/li>\n<li>Horse-carriage rides.<\/li>\n<li>Mississippi paddleboat rides.<\/li>\n<li>Mississippi Aquarium Museum.<\/li>\n<li>Lots of ice cream.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Finally finished reading <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Watership_Down\">Watership Down<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Started reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.compassionatecarnivore.com\/\">The Compassionate Carnivore<\/a>, which gives me a warm fuzzy feeling that I&#8217;m not alone in being a <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.red-bean.com\/sussman\/?p=77\">freerange-itarian<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Read the through the new 4th edition <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Dungeons-Dragons-Players-Handbook-Roleplaying\/dp\/0786948671\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1215403897&#038;sr=8-1\">D&#038;D Player&#8217;s Handbook<\/a>.  I&#8217;m a geek.  I like roleplaying games.  Sue me.<\/li>\n<li>Went to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/indu\/\">Indiana Dunes<\/a> &mdash; at a friend&#8217;s house &mdash; for the 4th of July.<\/li>\n<li>Went to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.renfair.com\/bristol\/\">Bristol Renaissance Faire<\/a><a><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Shot 300 photos.  A few of them were pretty good.<\/li>\n<li>Beta-tested an excellent new text-adventure game written by a friend;  it should be available to the public by August 1st.<\/li>\n<li>Played my banjo at the usual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fridaynightjam.com\/aboutus.cfm\">Friday night jam<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Time to go back to Google;  I&#8217;m continuing to lead a team whose goal is to make <a href=\"http:\/\/code.google.com\/hosting\">Google Code&#8217;s<\/a> Subversion service as fast and scalable as possible.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m done with a nice 12-day vacation.
